March 2009 to current

My responsibilities with this office consist of assisting the Technical Support Group with general Linux administration. Tasks include building and maintaining various server clusters, virtual machines, lab workstations, and blade servers. CentOS 5 is the operating system we use on new installations while still maintaining RedHat 4 and RedHat 5 on older clusters. We are also using Solaris 10 in a small cluster to take the advantage of the ZFS filesystem and running VMware to consolidate physical servers to virtual servers where feasible.

Linux System Administrator with The News-Gazette, Champaign, Illinois

March 2004 to February 2009

I was hired by The News-Gazette to standardize, deploy, and maintain Linux as a server platform for the company replacing a mix of various versions of Linux, OpenBSD, and Windows. Standardization was centered on RedHat Enterprise Linux 4. Most servers were upgraded to RHEL 5 after thorough testing. These servers performed a variety of functions throughout the company, most critical being corporate email, web, DNS, and file servers. Email was handled by a combination of open source products: sendmail, IMAP/POP, and Squirrelmail. The web servers were a typical LAMP setup with Apache and PHP with mysql on the back end. DNS was a standard Bind9 installation. File servers were all running Samba; netatalk (Appletalk) was also used until the elimination of MacOS9. The main corporate file servers authenticated through an MS Active Directory server and used the Linux ext3 filesystem ACL's for granular access control. All servers were set up with software RAID for data integrity. Enterprise backups were handled by an open source Linux product called BackupPC, which used rsync and ssh as the underlying transportation protocols.
